Shawnee County & Northeast Kansas Resources

If you have ancestors that lived in Shawnee County or you are interested in our local history, we’re here to help you find the answers you seek. We are very familiar with records and research repositories in our county and the adjoining region. Over our 50+ years of operation, our members and volunteers have devoted countless hours of searching out local records, compiling indexes and finding aids, and now digitizing records to make them more readily accessible to our fellow genealogists. Although most are related to Shawnee County, we do also have cemetery listings and obituary indexes for adjoining counties (Osage and Wabaunsee Counties).

Our library houses an extensive collection of materials pertaining to Shawnee County, including original Probate and Naturalization records, marriage license applications, and tax books, cemetery records, city directories, local histories and more. In addition to what our collection includes, both the Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library and the Kansas Historical Society offer strong collections of  local history materials.

Indexes and Finding Aids

Over the years that we have been in business, our members/volunteers have done an amazing job of compiling and indexing genealogical records pertaining to Shawnee County, and some for our adjoining counties. They include cemetery records, vital records, marriages, probate, naturalization and various other historical publications. Today, we are continuing that work as we identify additional source materials, and are beginning to digitize some of the original source records. We are excited to be able to make these records conveniently searchable on our website – one search will find matches across all of the databases that we currently have available. To see what we currently have, check our Search Our Records page.

Our Library Collection

Our library holdings include an extensive location of materials pertaining to Shawnee County.  To locate them, start by searching the Library Catalog by location, and select the “Kansas” button.  Then, narrow your search by selecting the “Counties” option in the “Search” dropdown box at the top of the results list, and type in “Shawnee” in the blank field.  If you find something of interest but are unable to visit our library in person, our volunteers will do lookups.  See our Research Assistance page for more detail.

Early Shawnee County Probate and Naturalization records (up to approximately 1920) – we have the original courthouse books in our library collection. The books have also been microfilmed/digitized and are available on FamilySearch.org.  To browse them, search the FamilySearch catalog by location (Kansas, Shawnee) and then select the record group of interest. Indexes to these records, from approximately 1860 – 1920s, are included in our searchable databases on this website.
